I’m really not into horror games, but The Forest was what got me into this game sequel – provided that I have teammates to play with. Otherwise, I think I’m good.
Here’s the luckiest gameplay move we unknowingly did playing Sons of the Forest for the first time. During this time, we had to Google lots of things, only when necessary. We absolutely did not research the endings or the best places to build a base, etc.
There may be some spoilers in this post. If you still haven't finished the game and do not want info, do not read this post.
Sons of the Forest
Sons of the Forest is the game sequel after The Forest. The story takes place in an island owned by Edward Puffton – the billionaire who went missing with his family, which your character is going to be looking for.
At the beginning, you will be in a helicopter scene together with two other passengers – one of whom is Kelvin (who plays as your AI companion in the game later on). After interacting with the laptop (a debrief of the missing people), the helicopter gets shot at by unknown assailants and crashes in either three starting locations – the beach, the forest, or the snowy mountains. This is random.
My team crashed at the beach (luckily – this is the best location to start). If you didn’t start here and you are beginning your journey, I’d find a way to travel and set starting base.
Once you crash, your game has officially commenced. It’s time to build fast before cannibals start getting curious. Build the boat house – this is key.
Who created Sons of the Forest?
The game was developed by Endnight Games and published by Newnight. You can buy it on Steam for $29.99.
The first game is called The Forest and is highly advised to play first before jumping to SOTF because the story starts here.
The beach located at the northern part of the island was where me and my team started. There is a cave at this location – get the loot (stun gun, rebreather, an artifact, cross schematic, laptop, and newspaper).
Then, build your first base – the boat. You can use this to travel around the island. We decided to set the boat base at the west side of the beach by the helipads and then build on top of snowy mountain for second base (land base).
Ironically, this is one of the best locations we unknowingly did. You’ll find out later.
Best Sons of the Forest Land Base - Pros of Building in the Snowy Mountain
There are options when it comes to the best land bases. Considering food, water, and safety – you have to weigh your options. In my team’s case, the northeast part of the snowy mountain was the best land base location for SOTF.
- Hot Spring – Water source and never freezes even during winter.
- Food Source – catch fish at the hot spring using a fish trap.
- Solafite Ores – mine at the abandoned camp nearby for your artifact needs.
- Abandoned Camp – loot items such as rope, cat food, towels as they respawn.
TIP: Build here once you get a glider.
This is how you can get to the top of the snowy mountain easily.
Cons of Building In Snowy Mountain
The location we picked had constant thunder and lightning which was annoying af. This is because the solafite ores are here. Also, it is always cold and snowing. Ugh.
Food is scarce and almost had no animals. However, the pros outweighed the cons if you build smart.
Techniques for Building Key Buildings in Sons of the Forest
One of the structures you need is the Armor Upgrade in order to proceed and finish the game. You need this to open the Golden Door where Timmy leads you.
Hint: It’s in the NE part of the map inside the caves.
Here’s what we did to counter the enemy wave when activating/using the Armor Upgrade: Built on top of a mountain where enemies can’t get through. To reach the location, we ziplined our way to it from the snowy mountain base. Of note, do not build at any base where enemies can get through. You can even build this in a boat/raft.
For the Teleporter – it doesn’t matter. You just need the full artifact completed and usable. There are seven artifacts with the last one only attainable after finishing the game.
You cannot use teleport unless you finish the game and decide to stay in the island.
SOTF Endgame - the lucky coincident we discovered

Once you open the Golden Door, Timmy will lead you into an inferno battle with demons. Along the way, you can use the cross as your weapon (if you have it) to ignite them on fire while screaming, “May the power of Christ compells you!”
I mean, at least that’s what we did on Discord. 😅
It worked – the demons lit on fire. No need to waste your precious molotovs.
The elevator scene was quite weird, sad, and surprising. Virginia and Kelvin joins you in a dramatic cutscene. Then, you escape and find yourselves at the beach.
Guess what?
It’s where we had our boat parked by the helipads.
Guess what?
That’s where the finale happens.
As the cutscene ends on this finale, you find yourselves having to tackle the boss creature. I called her Big Betty. She was BIG and had thick lips. Hence, the name.
As you try to fight her, you also have to deal with the other creatures of the game that spawns around you. The amount of times I got shoved by Big Betty on the ground and had to be helped up.
And then, a beacon of light!
My teammate yelled, “The boat!!! Our boat’s right here!”
He started going for the boat to bring it to deep waters where Big Betty hopefully does not reach us.
It worked!
Thank God for that damn raft.
SOTF Finale - Pick your poison
It took us forever to decide which route to pick. Should we jump in to the helicopter with Timmy and his dad, or retrieve our backpacks and stay on the island with Virginia and Kelvin?
We fooled around trying to escape the scenario but a big invisible barrier somehow prevented us from just taking off back into the forest or the raft. 😆
We chose to stay – mainly because we wanted to complete the artifact and use that teleport device. Gotta experience the thrill, am I right?
Also, we didn’t want to make the lame mistake of saving Timmy (the one from The Forest). Sounds cruel but, anyway.
So, there you have it. Another completed forest game! I have not recorded most of this gameplay, so I apologize. I regret not doing that. Leave a comment below!
